There are 4 most important Yangtze River Ports along the Yangtze River, amongst which Chongqing Chaotianmen Dock and Yichang Maoping Port are the most frequently used ones, because they are serving for the most classic cruise lines. Wuhan Port and Shanghai Port will only provide services on Chongqing Shanghai Cruise Line, Wuhan Shanghai Cruise Line and Chongqing Wuhan Cruise Line.
Chaotianmen Dock
- Location: Chongqing
Chongqing Chaotianmen Dock (朝天门码头), or called Chaotianmen Port, is the busiest port serving for Yangtze River cruises. - Location: Yichang
Yichang has more than 3 ports. And at present, only Maoping Port (茅坪码头) and Sandouping Port (三斗坪码头), the closest ports to Three Gorges Dam, provide port service for Yangtze River cruises. Shanghai features two key ports for luxury passenger vessels. The Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal (上海吴淞口国际邮轮码头) serves as the main hub for international cruise ships, while the Shanghai International Passenger Terminal (上海国际客运中心码头) is frequently used by domestic luxury Yangtze river cruise ships.
Wuhan Port
- Location: Wuhan
Wuhan Port is settled in Wuhan downtown in the middle reaches of Yangtze River. Compared with a passenger port, Wuhan Port now more frequently served for transportation of goods. Normally, Yangtze River ships dock at the ports mentioned above, so you embark or disembark your ships at these docks. However, the Three Gorges experiences two distinct periods each year - the dry season from March to April, and the flood season from July to August (which may vary depending on the annual precipitation). During these periods, it's possible that your ship may be unable to dock at Chaotianmen Port. Consequently, there might be a need for a change in the port location in Chongqing.
Possible Port Change in Chongqing during Special Periods
For downstream cruises starting from Chongqing, instead of docking at Chaotianmen Dock, the ships may dock at Fengdu Port, which is about 3~4 hours’ drive from Chaotianmen. You will get to the appointed gathering place in Chongqing downtown to catch a free bus arranged by the cruise companies to the port. The gathering place varies according to different ship company, while usually it would be Chongqing Longtousi Tourism Distribution Center (重庆龙头寺旅游集散中心).
Besides, for the upstream cruises to Chongqing, you will disembark the ship at Fengdu Port too, and then be transferred to Chongqing downtown by free bus.
