The ship was well run and quite pleasant, with a small dance floor where some entertainment was put on in the evenings. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the service was very good overall. The breakfast buffet was very good, with a selection of western and Chinese food. Lunch and dinner were exclusively Chinese food, which was different from what we had expected. However, the quality and quantity of the meals were fine.

The itinerary on board was good, with shore excursions to the Ghost City and a trip up the Shennong side stream in small boats. On the final night we transited the ship locks at the Three Gorges Dam, and on the final morning we visited the dam itself. We also had the benefit of seeing the total eclipse of the sun on 22nd July. The captain stopped the boat to give us a steady view for our photographs from the upper sundeck. This was truly spectacular, and a real bonus.

We took the President No.1 cruise ship from YiChang to Chongqing. Accommodation onboard was okay, but definitely not luxury like I expected. We were told it was because this ship is one of the older models. We upgraded to a VIP room which was an improvement. There was no elevator on the ship, but the ship was smaller, so not much of a problem using the stairs. Food was Chinese - but, hey, we're in China!

The Shennong Stream excursion was included! Beautiful scenery and enjoyable to sit in a 12 passenger wooden boat rowed by two oarsmen. We especially enjoyed the traditional love song our guide and "captain" of the wooden boat sang together for us. Don't miss going through the locks! Very interesting - we had a scheduled program of entertainment during that time, but decided to skip it to observe our passage through the locks. Even though it was at night, the dam area is well lit.

The staff on board gave us great service and those who didn't speak English were very quick to find someone who could. I found the English level here a lot higher than in other places in China that I have traveled.
