Yangtze Cruise Tips from Linda

  1. When is the best time to have a Yangtze River cruise?

The "best" depends on which you are more concerned about, weather or price. To most visitors, the bestRed Leaves in Yangtze River Autumnseasons for Yangtze Cruise should be the Spring and Autumn, namely, April to June and September to November when the weather is cool and comfortable, neither cold nor hot.

  2. Which cruise line should I choose?

There are different cruise lines to cater different customer demands. Cruising between Chongqing and Wuhan on deluxe ships is the most popular for tourists.

  3. Should I take a upstream or downstream cruise?

Upstream means sailing from lower part of river to the up to the higher part of the river.Less cost, and it usually costs 10%-30% lower than that of downstream and more time onboard for leisure activities, Chinese folk customs, etc. Downstream mean sailing from higher part of the river to the lower part of the river. There is enough time to enjoy the shore excursions because all scenic sites are arranged in the daytime.

  4. How long is the cruise vacartion?

You cruise vacation duration is decided by the ship and itinerary you have chosen and booked.

  5. Top five cruise ships recommended by our former customers

    Hi Linda!
We are just sitting at the airport here in Shanghai be and just about to message you.
Firstly a big THANK YOU for making the whole process so easy. We could not have done this cruise without all your guidance, it is greatly appreciated! I hope your boss knows how great you are :D
In regards to the cruise we had a lovely time! Overall a fabulous experience. Below I will leave some comments and constructive criticism.
Activities and Shore Excursions: Andy was a great River Guide and we enjoyed all the lectures with him! We also enjoyed our shore trips - especially the goddess stream!
Food: We liked the mix of western and Chinese food, always enough to eat! Last dinner was a great idea. However we think it is unfortunate that dinner was not included on the first night, it was too hard to eat before the cruise and would have been nice to meet everyone. Maybe just increase the price a little and include.
Also it was a little frustrating to always have to wake up early for breakfast...being on holidays we would love to sleep in! Not have to be awake at 7am for food!
Cruise rooms and cleaning: loved the rooms, very comfy! Everything was always clean and awesome!
Cruise staff: Were helpful and always smiling!
Other comments: We also wish that the price was a little higher and that water was included...water is a basic necessity and it is frustrating to have to continue paying.
Also it would have been nice to receive a price list beforehand with all the extra optional costs such as shore excursions, bar prices, spa prices etc. etc. Just to of had a better idea before boarding.
But again those are just small things which did not take away from our time on Victoria Anna. We had a great time and thank you again Linda!
    Kind Regards,
    Ashlee

    Hi Linda,

I am in Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport now waiting for my flight back to Malaysia. Ya, I truly enjoyed my first DIY trip in China with your help. The Century Sun was a good choice to cruise along the Yangtze River. Well, I did read about the positive comments on Trip Advisor before placing the booking. Everything goes well. The cabin was ok and the food was fabulous. The buffet spread for every meal was sumptuous and I get to try different kind of dishes everyday ranging from western to eastern food. The off shore excursions are well organised.

I am so glad that I have asked you to purchase my train tickets earlier on. Otherwise I would have to stand all the way throughout my journey.

Once again thank you and I will seek your help again for my next DIY in China.

    Regards,

    Madam Ang.

    Dear Linda,

I was delighted with the cruise, so here is some useful information for future guests, especially non-Chinese people

The cabins are great, non-smoking but people do seem to often smoke on their private balconies. They do offer you upgrades to the room, but I declined. they also offer you an upgrade for dining to the VIP dinner room, but do not go for it, as you will miss the atmosphere of being with everyone.

On my cruise there were about 200 Chinese and just 7 non-Chinese, however we were very well looked after with announcements etc in English and all staff had some command of English and one of the staff, Shirley, was exceptionally good at making us feel welcome and talking to us at our table every day. The 'foreigners' were all grouped together. Shirley advised us to go on some tours but suggested we avoided one as it was all going to be presented in Chinese and we probably would not find it very interesting!

Do not miss the 'Three Kingdoms Scenic Spot' show it was truly spectacular, one of the best live shows I have seen, beating those of Disney parks. And 'no' I have no idea what it was all about but it was amazing!

Each day a couple of bottles of water were provided free. My guide recommended I took my own drinks onboard which I did, he told me that the drinks were very expensive, however by hotel standards that was not so, a decent cocktail was around $12. There are small shops on several of the deck on the ship where you can buy snacks and soft drinks.

Meal times were a bit of a crush with everyone rushing to the buffet at the start, but the food was better than I expected. On our table we were provided knives and forks, but we all refused them and insisted on chopsticks!

I was surprised that the bars were empty a lot of the time, except for the 'Farewell dinner' when the 'foreigners' were given a reserved spot, another example of being well looked after. The crew gave a cabaret performance which was certainly not Broadway, but was fun to watch.

Dress on the boat was very casual, we were wearing shorts/very casual for breakfast and lunch and a little more 'smart casual' for the evenings. the advice of a shirt and tie for the Captains dinner was not correct, simple trousers and a casual or polo shirt for men and a simple dress etc for women.

The Chinese guests on the boat were very friendly at all times, with quite a few photos taken of us with some of them. One of the highlights for me was when a lady of 87 starting chatting to me in perfect English, but I then learnt she had been a professor of languages for a career.

You are not expected to tip the staff all the time, but a small tip for the cleaner of the cabin ($15) and the same for the waiter who served all the meals at our table seemed appropriate.

At the end of the cruise, my guide who took me to the airport was very pleasant and good conversation, She did not really tell me anything much about the area, but she was nice and made me confident of the journey and assisted me to check in for my flight and then took me to the restaurant before boarding at the airport and assisted me to buy my lunch before heading home.

The service I had from Yangtze Rover Cruises, and especially my contact Linda Deng was exceptionally good, far better than usually experienced from other agencies.

    Best Regards,

    Larry Smith

    Dear Linda,

I wasn’t able to send a reply earlier. My apologies.

Overall, we were satisfied with the cruise. The Century Paragon was well-equipped and clean and our Executive Suite was spacious. We are happy that we selected that and that we also had a separate dining room on the top floor as well as a lounge where we could enjoy coffee or tea throughout the day, especially because food was only available at meal times on this cruise.

The weather wasn’t bad on the last day, was very nice on the second day, but poor on the first day. We didn’t realize that it is normal for it to be very foggy along that route (as was explained by the crew) and therefore, the views would not be very good. Unfortunately the fog was so bad one night that no boats were allowed to sail overnight at all. Because we were delayed until 5 AM, the itinerary had to be changed and we were unable to see the second gorge. There is not much that can be done about that.

One suggestion, however — before disembarking and preferably in the advertising of the excursions, you should warn people with disabilities or older age about the level of difficulty. I personally had a knee injury and was not able to visit The Red Pagoda because of the number of steps. I might have made it had I brought my cane but I didn’t know that it would be so difficult. There were people more elderly, too, that couldn’t visit it. We had no choice but to walk back to the ship. This happened again when visiting The White Emperor’s City. From the ship to the top of the mountain was over 500 steps. I made it up and so did an older couple, but it was very difficult and had we known, we might not have gone along. Please tell your customers in your advertising and certainly before disembarking about the level of accessibility and difficulty of the shore excursion.

Another point we would like to make — the final day. It was a bit of a let-down having left the ship to visit the Three Gorges Dam Project, only to be brought back to a bus terminal and simply left there. Had we not pre-arranged for transportation to the airport we would have been left feeling quite stranded. As it was, many of us did not fly out until that evening leaving a 7-hour wait at the airport with little to do there. (It didn’t help the the flight didn’t actually leave until midnight, meaning we had been there for 11 hours.)

What we thought might have been nice is if there had been an optional lunch arranged for us somewhere in Yichang where we could relax, socialize before we said our goodbyes, and fill in some time. Also, our tour guide simply got off the bus, probably to pick up another tour, and we didn’t know this. We would have given her a gratuity had we known she wasn’t going to be with us until the end of the bus ride.

We hope you appreciate receiving this feedback. Thank you for your good organization. We had a memorable trip.

    Best regards,

    Janice Barbour Moss
