Shanghai sits on the coast of the East China Sea, south of the mouth of the Yangtze River. Running from north to south, the Huangpu River that splits the city in two teems with traffic. Thanks to its advantageous geographic location, Shanghai is an excellent sea and river port, boasting easy access to the vast hinterland.

Shanghai did have another name "Hu" because ancient fishermen in Shanghai invented a bamboo fishing device called "Hu". ("Du" in Chinese means "creek"). After the first Opium War The British opened a concession in Shanghai and ignited Shanghai's evolution. Once a small fishing village on the edge of the muddy Huang Pu River, it has becomeone of the world's most modern and sophisticated cities.

With a pleasant northern subtropical maritime monsoon climate, Shanghai enjoys four distinct seasons–grey and cold winter, humid and hot summer, warm spring and cool autumn, generous sunshine and abundant rainfall. The average annual temperature is 16 ℃/60.8 F.Spring (from March to May) and autumn (from late September to early November) are advised to visit this exciting city for their pleasant temperature and much sunlight.
