Chongqing Location & Geography

Chongqing is one of four municipalities in China, large cities that are not part of a province by report directly to the national government. It is the only municipality not located on the east coast. (The other three are Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin.)

Situated at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Jialing River in southwest China, it covers an area of 82,400 square kilometers, with a total population of 30.9 million.

Chongqing is an enormous, one of Chinese megalopolis (in terms of geographical area, it is about twice the size of Taiwan; while in terms of population, it is about twice the size of Beijing).

Chongqing Histoty & Culture

The history of Chongqing can be dated back to about 3000 years ago, which absorbs about 50 ethnic groups and most of them belong to the majority Han Chinese, and others being the Tujia, the Miao, the Hui, the Man and the Yi. Therefore, Chongqing has the thriving minority cultures, making it an attractive tourist venue.

As the birthplace of Bayu Culture, Chongqing has established a Bayu Folk Culture Village. (Bayu Culture means the culture of the semi-mythical state of Ba, which is supposed to have been established during the 11th century BCE before it was overrun by the state of Qin, whose origns in contrast are fully documented).
